May 15, 2023 – Jonathan McCollum, Chair of Federal Government Relations at DHC, was interviewed by Forbes for their article “Student Loan Forgiveness Update: Biden May Have Other Ways to Help Borrowers” to discuss the White House’s options surrounding federal student loan forgiveness plans in the run-up to the Supreme Court’s decision.

If the Supreme Court delivers an unfavorable ruling, McCollum argues that the 1965 Higher Education Act (HEA) may provide necessary relief as many Democratic leaders have encouraged President Biden to issue an executive order under HEA offering student loan forgiveness. Another option, as pointed out by McCollum, is to expand the Pell Grant program and its eligibility requirements to include middle-income households.

McCollum believes that student loan forgiveness needs to happen before “it has a chance to spiral out of control.”
