July 24, 2020 – In an abnormal year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this week the State Legislature met in Albany to conclude what was their normal session. This week was about wrapping up legislative priorities, as well as, passing bills needed for the functioning of local governments. Proposals of note that passed this week were:

• Legislation creating an automatic voter registration system in NYS;
• First passage of a constitutional amendment that would reform the state’s redistricting process; and
• A series of bills that continue to implement various criminal and civil justice reforms across the State

While both houses have adjourned to the call of their respective leaders, it is anticipated that the Legislature may be called back to Albany by Governor Cuomo this fall to pass additional legislation as it relates to the pandemic and/or supplement the State Budget with revenue from tax collections and/or the receipt of Federal Aid.
